Exclamation GOOD Reasons To Seriously Reconsider Your PS3 Pre-order

Quoted from: PHWOnline Forums
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Well, since E3 started, Sony have done nothing but prove their incompetance. I've always been fairly anti-PS3, but it's generaly been due to there complete lack of tact and ability when dealing with the public, their console and, well, everything really. Let's look at the latest balls ups from the company that should have had no problem completely taking the industry by storm. They had the technology, they had the money, they had developer support, they had the more than loyal fanbase and their opponents are microsoft, it's really amazing how badly they've done. Let's look at some of the things that not many people know about:

1. This is a true example of a PS3 game... which isn't running on one
Well, we all know Sony's tend towards pre-rendered footage and passing it off as in-game, but this is even better. The execs didn't even know that their top-notch, killer-app which they were so proud of, Gran Turismo HD, was running on a PC, on an emulator, not a PS3 despite Sony saying it shows of the true power of the PS3. Don't believe me? There's a number of articles floating about the net on the actual indepth reporting sites out there, on of them gave a loose transcript of the hillarity at the booth:

Quote:
SONY SUIT #1: (in Japanese) The sound's too soft.
SONY SUIT #2: (in Japanese) It's terrible. We should turn it up. (to Security) Turn up the sound.
SECURITY: It's a monitor. We can't.
SONY SUIT #1: (in Japanese) What? Tell him to turn it up.
SONY SUIT #2: (in English) Turn up the sound.
SECURITY: We can't.
KOTAKU: (in Japanese) He says he can't.
SONY SUIT #2: (Takes the remote and turns up the sound) It's not getting louder.
SECURITY: It's running on an emulator.
KOTAKU: (in Japanese) He says it is running on an emulator. Is it running on an emulator?
SONY SUIT #1: (in Japanese) No, it isn't.
KOTAKU: Is it running on an emulator?
SECURITY: Yeah, it's running on an emulator.
KOTAKU: (in Japanese) He says it's an emulator.
SONY SUIT #1; (wipes his face/visibly annoyed)
MS originally showed off a few playable 360 games on PowerPC systems last year, but in all actuallity the hardware inside them were fairly close to the 360, just with a single core processor not three, so it was logical given the amount they needed for the show. Sony running their 'eye-shatteringly awesome' franchise game, which no doubt they'll sell the system around, on a PC under an Emulator, on the other hand, is not logical, is completely different architecture and completely destroys their claims of the PS3 being far supperior to any modern PC, especially with claims of it being a live demonstration of the PS3's capaibilities and the fact that Sony's suits didn't even know about it.

2. Sony, why's there a 360 behind that black curtain?
Assasin's Creed, originally announced last year as the cross-platform Project Assasin at X05, was trailered by Sony at E3 as PS3 Exclusive and given a real-time showing behind closed doors. Behind those closed doors was a black curtain obscuring the view of the system the game was running on. Sony, not having a single complete PS3 at E3, hiding the playable system from view? This is because it was running on a 360, not a PS3. Fanboys can shut up about how it can't be true because the "360 can't handle that good graphics!ZOMG!" because it can, be quiet, I'll get to that. So, Sony are yet again boasting the power and awesomeness of their system, yet proving that they are in no position to make such claims. According to a Ubisoft rep in the backroom, it's apparently not PS3 exclusive anyway, they're just trying to keep Sony happy with a time-limitted deal.

3. Where's my Devkit? What are the specs? What horsepower does this thing have? I NEED TO FINISH MAKING MY FUCKING GAME, SONY YOU CUNTS!
Developers are getting increasingly anxious as the supposed launch date of the console gets nearer (I say supposed, as Sony say November, but nVidia apparently still said 2007 due to the GPU's just before E3) as Sony have not got enough devkits out to them, many haven't even started development because they simply don't have access to the kit or even any hard information about what it can handle. IGN recently posted a list of how far a lot of apprent launch games are in development:
Quote:
# Untold Legends -- 60%
# MotorStorm -- 50%
# Mobile Suit Gundam -- 20%
# Resistance: Fall of Man -- 70%
# Warhawk -- 30% (this must be why the demo here was so small, short, incomplete, and not-yet-devastating)
# Gran Turismo HD -- 20%
# Heavenly Sword -- 50%
# Genji 2 -- 60%
# F1 '06 -- 60%
# Virtua Tennis 3 -- 20%
# Sonic the Hedgehog -- 40%
# Madden 07 -- 30%
# Heavy Rain -- 20%
# WarDevil -- ?? (this is the first PS3 demo of the game; it has previously been built on PC, and this early PS3 build does not yet have anti-aliasing, motion blur, or depth of field)
# Assassin's Creed -- *TBA
# Indiana Jones -- *TBA
# Full Auto 2: Battlelines -- *TBA
# The Club -- *TBA
# Fatal Inertia -- *TBA
Most of these games seem to be barely started, which is certainly not a good sign. According to industry reports, many multi-platform games coming out on the PS3 and 360 have changed their lead platform to 360 because of all these major hitches in their ability to develop PS3 titles (a lot, as Ubioft did, demo'd their games on the 360 even if they were being backed by sony.)

4. You showed off some really unbelievable 'ingame' footage of Killzone 2, Motorstorm and Devil May Cry 4 last year, where are they now?
Last year, Sony showed off pre-rendered videos and fooled 90% of their fans in to thinking that was actual PS3 footage and exactly how the games would play. This year, there's no word at all, infact they decided to waste most of their time at their conference on the seriously unimpressive GTHD, which wasn't even running on the console. Why? Well, obviously they're not ready for showing yet. Last year they showed holywood quality cinematics, it probably took them a whole year to do that, so as far as actual game development goes, they're probably lagging behind because of point 3 as well as trying to some how live up to the hype Sony built for them.

5. Where's my holywood quality graphics, Sony?!?
Sony yet again claimed the power of real-time hollywood quality graphics with their new console and used the Killzone 2 video as 'evidence' to the fact. Is this true? Can the PS3 truely give real-time effects and graphics the likes of which WETA have banks of supercomputers to render up? The answer, unfortunately for all you PS3 fanboys, is no. Sony were spewing grade A bullshit when they said that. All reports say that the games shown on the PS3 don't even come close to the pre-rendered videos they showed last year and nothing shown was much better than anything on the 360. Here's a quote from a game' journalist after he got back from E3

Quote:
I saw every single one of the PS3 games there and I really think Sony has some big problems ahead of it. None of them came close to what is now obvious CGI from last years e3. And there was only about 2 titles that looked good, but not great. None looked better in any way shape or form than 360 games, warhawk looked good, but again not great or midblowing. In fact battle stations midwayon 360 looked as good if not better, clouds included. Warhawk diden't come close to the CG movie they showed of it the year before. But yea there was not one title that was not as good graphicly on 360 or quite a bit better graphicly on 360 right now. So if this is all they can do with a 600$ peace of hardware, they got some big problems ahead.
6. GPU Power vs CPU Power
Sony have always been of the opinion that their consoles are technically the best there is and hypes them up to be far more powreful than they are, the PS3 is no exception. Did you know that the 360's GPU (that's 'Graphics Processing Unit') has been confirmed, by impartial, multi-platform developers, to beat the PS3's in benchmarks, while the PS3 edges it on CPU performance, just. What does this mean? Well, this means that, despite Sony's focus on graphics over gameplay and originallity, it yet again leaves them laggging behind MS. The 360 is technically capable of pushing better graphics than the PS3. The PS3 could be able to handle slightly more complex physics, AI and such, but with the terrible APIs, codebases and general coding cycle of the PS3, it'll be a hell of a lot harder to use that extra power.

7. No! My memory's going! What happened to it all?
Sony, while copying mostly from Nintendo, have taken a leaf out of MS's book with having the PS3 run on an actual backend operating system which the game runs on top of, can switch to and so one (yeah, just like the 360), only it'll eat the shit out to the system's RAM. The PS3 has 256mb XDR memory, 64mb of which is eaten by the OS, and 256mb GDDR3 memory, which loses 32mb to the OS. That's almost 20% of the system's memory being used all the time, leaving only 80% for games. This ofcourse limits what developers can do with their games as as much memory as possible, despite being a footnote to most PC gamers, is needed to be able to work with the high resolution models and textures that the PS3 can supposedly handle with no problem. No matter how steaming the CPU or GPU, you run out of memory and it's bye bye to performance and 'glitches' could very well occur due to sections of data not being able to be loaded...

Urgh, I wrote a bit too much so I'll leave it at that for now. Everything I've written in this thread, other than what's obviously personal opinion, is syphoned off various articles, reports and interviewers, so it's as factualy correct as you're going to get. I'll add more reasons when I can be bothered and find the articles. Honestly, though, is it really gonna be worth $600? All answers so far point to "no".
